Art for All: Corn Mandalas
Saturday June 10 & Saturday September 16 | 11:00-1:00, 2:00 - 4:00 | FREE
This activity is for ages 5-up
Jorge Rojas is creating a new Corn Mandala for the UVU Museum of Art, the seventh in an ongoing series of temporary site-specific installations made from maize that the artist began 11 years ago. His mandalas are inspired by the significance of corn in Mexican and other Mesoamerican cultures, as well as by other spiritual traditions like Hinduism and Buddhism and their sacred art. But instead of using materials such as sand, flowers, and paint to make his mandalas (as tantric Buddhists famously do), he uses corn kernels to celebrate the importance of maize for Indigenous cultures in the Americas.During this free Art for All program, we will be creating Corn Mandalas inspired by exhibition artist Jorge Rojas. Rojas's mandalas represent the universal and unifying life source from which all life stems and infinitely returns to. They are meant as a joyful celebration of abundance, fertility, renewal of life, healing and protection—an invitation for our community to be present in visualizing love, embracing presence, and lightness.
Art for All: Gente de Maiz (People of Corn)
Saturday July 8 & Saturday August 5| 11:00-1:00, 2:00 - 4:00 | FREE
This activity is for ages 5-up
During this free Art for All program, we will be creating figures called People of Corn, by exhibition artist Jorge Rojas. For more than 12 years, much of Rojas’s sculptural and performance work has celebrated the spiritual significance of corn in cultures throughout the Americas. Rojas hopes that this project will not only encourage people to think about our relationship to the food we eat and establish a space for meaningful and lasting cross-cultural exchange, but also serve as an opportunity for meditation, dialogue, and connection.
